Iconic 90s Video Games We Still Love And Play

The 90s were a golden era for many things, but especially video gaming. Some of the best strategy games, fighting games, platformers, arcade games, puzzle games, and the like, were created in the 90s. Even some of the best RPGs, both Japanese and western, were created in the 90s.

Some of them have become iconic from that time, and are still loved and played by many people. Here are the best of them.

Final Fantasy VII

There are not many games that are as good as Final Fantasy VII. Released in 1996, it is one of the best games if you are into RPGs. The story is great, the characters are great and the music is more than memorable. It is available as a remaster, as well as a slightly touched-up original. Try it.

DOOM

DOOM is one of the most popular shooters today, especially after the release of DOOM: Eternal, which is said to work on glorified typewriters, let alone real computers, while providing great graphics.

The original DOOM, however, was released in 1993 and is every bit as interesting as its modern sibling. Try the original and you will see what difficult gaming looks like.

Super Mario World

It is an iconic game that does not need more introduction. Jump around, eat mushrooms, Mario is just an iconic character from an iconic series and this is the game to play.

StarCraft

The original StarCraft was released in 1997 and is a great strategy game, one that set the tone for many strategy games to follow. This game was what started a large part of esports. An iconic strategy game with lots of lore as well as gameplay.

Grim Fandango

LucasArts made some of the best point-and-click adventure games and most of them were made in the 90s. There are a plethora of them, Day of the Tentacle, Sam & Max Hit the Road, The Dig, and this one, Grim Fandango.

It is an amazing game that takes a great character, story, and setting, and gives you the tools to have fun and solve puzzles. It has a remaster, so you can play the modern version if you feel like it.

Thief: The Dark Project

Released in 1998, it is a stealth game that does a lot of other things right. Not many games, even modern ones, have so many subtle details. This was one of the first games which made sure that your footsteps will make different noise on different surfaces.

The plot of the game has its own life, one which you can discover if you pay enough attention and are a bit more patient.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3

This game, along with Sonic & Knuckles, which is its sequel, often packed together, are some of the best Sonic games from the 90s. Play as either Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles and run through the levels, finding Chaos Emeralds, defeating bosses, and unlocking secrets. The levels have great music.

Resident Evil

A classic horror game from Capcom, one of the first successful Japanese games outside Japan. It is a classic and has influenced many horror games that followed, years after.

These are some of the best video games from the 90s which are still popular to this day and still played to this day.
